Best Rowing Machine for Home (2026): How to Pick One the Whole Family Will Use

A home rower earns its floor space when more than one person wants a turn.

Short answer: The best rowing machine for home, if more than one person will use it, is one that fits every body in the house, keeps everyone's stats separate and gives each person a reason to come back. For most families, that's the Aviron Strong Series Rower: unlimited profiles, about 1 to 100 lb of resistance, a 507 lb capacity, and games, classes, scenic rows and streaming on one screen. If you row alone and only care about the numbers, the Concept2 RowErg is the simpler, cheaper pick.

Garage Gym Reviews tests a lot of rowers. In its 2026 roundup, it named the Aviron Strong Series Rower its Best Overall High-End Rowing Machine. When its testers debated which rower "has it all," they wrote, "the Aviron was quick to rise to the top."

For a family, our own number matters even more: 92% of Aviron members are still working out a year later. A shared rower only pays off if people keep using it, and in most houses that means three or four people with different heights, goals and attention spans. Buy a machine that suits one of them and it becomes an expensive clothes rack for everyone else.

Full disclosure: Aviron makes the Strong Series, and we'll say plainly where a Concept2, Hydrow or Ergatta is the better buy. Competitor specs come from each brand's US website, checked in October 2026.

How Do You Choose the Best Rowing Machine for Home?

Start with the hardest person in your house to fit: the tallest, the heaviest or the least keen. Then check seven things.

  1. Separate profiles. Each person needs their own history, personal bests and leaderboard spot. Aviron, Hydrow and Ergatta include unlimited profiles on one membership. Concept2's PM5 monitor has none, so each person keeps a free online Logbook and switches users in the ErgData app.
  2. Fit for every body. Check the weight limit, the rail length and the seat height. A 20-inch seat like Aviron's is far easier to get on and off than an 11 or 14-inch one, which matters for tall users and for anyone with stiff knees, grandparents included.
  3. A wide resistance range you can change mid-row. A beginner and a former college athlete need very different loads, often on the same evening.
  4. More than one way to work out. Games, coached classes, scenic rows, live races, streaming. The more formats one machine covers, the more people in your house find their own reason to use it.
  5. Noise. Magnetic resistance is the quietest, air the loudest, water somewhere in between. That matters at 6 a.m. with the kids still asleep. More in how loud is a rowing machine?
  6. Storage. Rowers run about 7 feet long in use. A machine that stands upright without a wall mount is the easiest fit for a shared room.
  7. Age guidance. Aviron's equipment is designed for ages 10 and up with adult supervision. Hydrow and Ergatta set 13 as their minimum. Concept2 sets no minimum but advises keeping unsupervised children away from the machine.

How Do the Best Home Rowing Machines Compare?

Weight limits are close, except for Hydrow at 375 lb. The bigger gap is on the screen: only Aviron and Ergatta build a full game library into the machine, and only Aviron runs streaming apps.

The NordicTrack RW900 and Peloton's Row+ are popular too, but both are rated for users up to 300 lb, and the Peloton has no games.

Why Is the Aviron Strong Series the Best Rowing Machine for Families?

Put a score on the workout and suddenly there's a line for the rower.

Because five people can use it five different ways. On one evening in the same house:

  • The competitor races other members live or chases a leaderboard spot.
  • The gamer plays Rags to Riches, where every stroke fires a cannon at a pirate ship.
  • The planner follows a coached class or a structured program.
  • The wanderer rows a scenic route somewhere far from the living room.
  • The multitasker streams the next episode of their show.

All of it lives in Aviron World, more than 1,000 workouts across science-backed games, races, coached classes, Les Mills sessions, scenic destinations and your own streaming apps. For a household, the specs that count are:

  • Unlimited profiles on one membership, each with its own history and personal bests
  • About 1 to 100 lb of resistance across 16 levels, adjustable mid-row
  • Room for users up to 507 lb and 6'8", with a 20-inch seat and footplates that adjust for width as well as length
  • About 60 dB, roughly the level of a normal conversation
  • Upright storage with no wall mount
  • A 20-year warranty with an active membership, or 10 years on the frame as standard

For how profiles and the family membership work day to day, see Aviron for families.

"My family of 5 have all been using the new rower. My wife loves rowing in the virtual places. My daughter is now part of the British online rowing team. All of us have been using the how to row videos. I found something great for the whole family."

When Is Another Rower the Better Choice?

For three kinds of household, we'd point you elsewhere.

  • Concept2 RowErg, if everyone in your house is self-motivated, cares mostly about split times and wants the lowest price in this guide. It's the rowing world's benchmark and very hard to break. The trade-off is that there's no content on the machine, so you bring your own tablet for apps. Already own one? The Aviron app connects to the PM5.
  • Hydrow, if your family loves instructor-led rowing filmed on real water, including live rows. It has no games or streaming apps, though, and tops out at 375 lb.
  • Ergatta, if you want a wooden water rower that looks like furniture and your family mostly enjoys interval-style games. Its resistance can't be changed mid-row, and the seat sits low, at 11 to 12 inches.

If your household has a bit of all those people in it, the Strong Series covers the most ground. And if price is the sticking point, Aviron offers financing through Affirm and is HSA/FSA eligible through Truemed. Spec-by-spec breakdowns: Aviron vs Concept2, Aviron vs Hydrow and Aviron vs Ergatta.

How Do You Get the Whole Family to Actually Use It?

Picking the right machine is most of the work. The rest is a little game design at home, and a family study backs it up. In the BE FIT trial (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2017), 200 adults from 94 families tracked their steps for 12 weeks. Families who could earn points and level up together hit their step goals on 53% of days, compared with 32% for families without the game.

  • Run a weekly household leaderboard, like most meters by Sunday night.
  • Give each person their own goal, so a 10-minute row and a 2,000-meter test both count.
  • Rotate formats: a game on Monday, a scenic row on Wednesday, a class on Friday.
  • Keep sessions short. Ten to 20 minutes fits around homework and dinner.
  • Celebrate personal bests, however small.

Our verdict: For a home where more than one person will row, buy the Aviron Strong Series. Of the four rowers here, it has the highest weight limit and the most ways to work out. If it's just you and you only want the numbers, a Concept2 does the job for less.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best rowing machine for home use?

For most homes, and especially shared ones, the Aviron Strong Series Rower. Garage Gym Reviews named it the Best Overall High-End Rowing Machine for 2026. It pairs a 507 lb capacity and about 1 to 100 lb of resistance with games, classes, scenic rows and streaming. For a solo, numbers-first rower on a budget, the Concept2 RowErg is the classic pick.

Can two people share one rowing machine?

Yes. Look for separate profiles, tool-free footplate adjustments, resistance you can change in seconds, and a rail and seat that fit you both. Aviron, Hydrow and Ergatta all include unlimited profiles on one membership.

Which type of rowing machine is best for home?

For most homes, magnetic or combined air and magnetic. Magnetic is the quietest; air gives a natural feel but gets loud; water sounds pleasant but can't be adjusted mid-row. Aviron combines air and magnetic resistance and runs at about 60 dB.

Can kids use a rowing machine?

Older kids can, with supervision. Aviron's equipment is designed for ages 10 and up with an adult present, and Hydrow and Ergatta set 13 as their minimum. Keep younger children clear of the seat rail and handle while anyone is rowing.

Is a smart rowing machine worth it for a family?

Usually, because the cost is spread over several people and the content keeps more of them rowing. If three people each row three times a week, that's nearly 470 workouts a year. We ran the numbers in is a home rower worth it?

One rower. Everyone's favorite workout.

Unlimited profiles, games to classes to streaming, and room for every body in the house.
