How steep is a 42% incline, and what can I do with it?

The Summit climbs to a 42% incline and drops to a -6% decline, one of the steepest ranges available on a home treadmill. At the top of that range it works much like a stairclimber built into a treadmill, torching up to 3x the calories and firing up your glutes, hamstrings, and calves in less time, while staying easier on your joints than running. The decline side lets you train descents too, which is what real terrain actually does and what most treadmills leave out.

Why does the top speed change at higher inclines?

For safety. The Summit’s maximum speed adjusts with the incline, so the steeper the climb, the lower the top speed. At a steep pitch your stride shortens and a misstep is harder to recover from, so the machine keeps speed within a range you can control. InclineSpeed range -6% to 0%1 to 12 mph (1.6 to 19.5 km/h) 0% to 15%1 to 14 mph (1.6 to 22 km/h) 15.5% to 25%1 to 8 mph (1.6 to 13 km/h) 25.5% to 42%1 to 6 mph (1.6 to 10 km/h) This also matches how the workouts are actually used. Steep settings are for powerful hiking and climbing, and flatter settings are where you run and sprint.

Can I use the Summit as a regular treadmill, or is it only for incline?

It’s a complete treadmill first. Flat and at moderate inclines you get a 4.5 CHP motor, a 14 mph top speed, and a 22" x 61" deck, which is the largest running surface we make. The 42% incline is there when you want it, not something you have to use. What you’re really buying is a machine that does everything a high-end treadmill does, plus a climbing range nothing else in the category offers.

It’s built for exactly this. 12-3-30 asks for a 12% incline, and the Summit reaches 42%, so you have room to progress well past the standard workout as it gets easier. You can set your own incline shortcut keys to jump straight to your usual settings, and the hiking handles let you adjust incline and check your heart rate without breaking stride.

Do I need to be very fit to use the Summit?

Plenty of people use the Summit for steady incline walking rather than running, which raises your heart rate and works your legs hard without the repeated impact of running. That makes it a common choice for people managing knee or hip discomfort. The Max CloudStride deck, with 8 extra-large shock absorbers, is the most cushioned deck we build, so each step lands softer. You can also set the belt acceleration to ramp up gently while you’re finding your footing.

Add 30 inches to your height. At maximum 42% incline, the deck rises about 18 inches, and you'll want 12 inches of clearance overhead. An 8 ft ceiling suits users up to 5'6"; 8.5 ft up to 6'0"; 9 ft up to 6'6". A lower ceiling doesn't rule it out, it just reduces your buffer or caps your top incline.

The treadmill has dual-band WiFi built in, plus an Ethernet port if you’d rather run a wired connection for the most stable streaming. Without a connection the machine still works: you can walk or run, change speed and incline, and see your live metrics.
